Day sixteen: Koh Tao

After two truck rides and two ferry boats, we arrived to our final destination. Apparently, Koh Tao is home to only about 700 people (the majority of those being scuba instructors!) and what seems like twice as many tourists. The beach is as scenic as it gets and the water is luke warm- perfect for sitting in to watch the purple sunset. We decided to hit the bars on the first night and a select few found ourselves dancing in the ocean into the early hours while sipping on an array of cocktails. We couldn't have had a better welcome! After only a handful of hours of sleep we went on an all day snorkeling trip around Koh Tao. First stop: Shark Bay. I had a good day and got to see two sharks (about 1.5m long), fish and coral that could easily audition for Finding Nemo and, right before the end of my last dive, a baracuda, which scared the shit out of me! Our final stop was a "private island" (owned by the same guy that owns Singha beer- the best and most popular brand of beer in thailand, also the most expensive local brand). This guy most obviously knows his stuff, or he has people that work for him that do because it was seriously impressive. Now, when you're already on a tropical island, you think it cant get any better. Well, it did! It was basically two islands joined by a (natural) sand bridge and has clear, turquoise blue water. While everybody else went for an overpriced drink at the bar, I trekked it up to the view point which turned out to be worth it as the picture proves. Mr. Singha is also quite 21st century and has banned all plastic bottles and bags from his island, along with fins, as live (and I assume terribly sensitive, vulnerable) coral surround the island.

Although I applied 30+ sunscreen after every dive and kept to the shade, the underwater world kept me distracted enough to allow the sun to burn my back a little bit. Again, I lucked out and its already turning into a tan today :)

Couldn't sleep last night and found myself walking around the streets and beach in my pajamas! Maybe it's jet lag kicking in about seventeen days late...

Today is our last full day here and as we aren't counting tomorrow's overnight train, our last night with the group. We've decided to start early and are going for dinner somewhere scenic to watch the sun set infront of us and then hopefully take it from there into the night :)

THANK YOU for the many messages- they really make a difference and I don't feel as much of an idiot writing this thing! Hope you enjoy the new pictures!

Kajashi!! I can not believe you are a bazillion miles away. Even when Im in california it seems like Germany is just around the corner. I can not even imagine how different and exciting everything must be over there. For some reason I have a little angst that you are in a grass hut with chinamen plotting to zock you ab and feed you dog :( I guess I have been watching 2 many movies lol...and the whole Birma and Tibet thing kind of sheds a bad light on Asia. Well I would be totally jealous of your weather but I have to say...Ausnahmsweise it is amazing weather in Hamburg. Yestday we went to a beach club on the Elbe...where we def need to go together because it totally reminded be or Carpe...and today we are going to lay out and soak up some more sun. Who knows how long the weather will last. Studying is not an option right now haha. My dad is fully in moving mode, packing up the house and tieing up lose ends in ddorf. Its strange to think that he wont be living there anymore :(. I got a bonus at work because I have been jumping in all the time AND I got a 50 euro Gutschein for some travle spass...so maybe on your next world trip Ill go with you and cash it in. Be careful of sharks because in The Beach...that movie with Leo, some guy got bitten and it didnt turn out so good...so PLEASE Beware!!! Other than the usual, there is not much to report. I am new to this whole blogging experience so I kind of had to find my way around to write you a note. I miss you very very much and I am sooo excited to see all of your pics and hear all of the stories. Please please be safe and keep an eye out for creepy chinamen lol...just kidding, everyone;)!! Although, now that I think about it...you are probably about 10feet taller than any of them, so there shouldnt be a problem!
Keep us posted (nifty blogger talk)

ok now i'm just really jealous of your dive trip....ahh if i was there i would be identifying every coral and probably annoying you a lot with my useless fish knowledge!! the pictures are beautiful!! i'm looking into going on an oil rig dive while you're here...thats where the fishies hang out offshore because it creates an artificial reef. anyways it will definitely not be as cool as what you've already seen. i hope you're having a wonderful time and don't get too burned!

Liebste Biene Kaja,
your blog is awesome! I would tell you how jealous I am but that would be repetitive... Although the sun is shining and Munich is aglow with the coming summer (and WIES'N!), I suppose it doesn't really compare at all to your Thai-Experience... Glad to hear you're taking good care of yourself - splurging on meals, sunscreen, snorkeling... I hope I get to see you soon - I mean, when you're back in the western hemisphere, of course... Vielleicht noch ein paar Tage München dranhängen? How can you possibly resist sunshine, beer and men in lederhosen? ;)
Pass gut auf dich auf, kleines, and I am waiting for my postcard!! My address is on my fb...
Big kiss and hug,
Steph xx

Hey Globetrotter!

Sitting in my dorms study room and instead of reading the ca. 150 pages I need to read today, I find myself re-reading your blog. Needless to say, that I am overcome with envy of all your adventures!
I have my first 6 hour long exam on Monday, and to make a decent mark I think I need to be on full time study lock down, and I know that you have already sent me some of your study powers but please if you have some en reserve send them to me! I cant seem to find the energy to study when the Danish weather is becoming Italian with the sun shinning all day and degrees over 20!
Love reading your blog, its a perfect escape from my days of late night shifts at the restaurant (but I only have three left this month, as I (and the rest of the bossboy crew have been let go per the 1st of June) and early mornings reading.

Love and miss you!
Bea

P.S We need to meet up this summer! I will hopefully be in London all of July, as I got my course pre-approved!!!

Its funny as i read the meesage you get, i am not the only one finding a sweet escape from hardcore revision and exam prep into your exotic world of corals and sunsets and ladyboys... Nevertheless, its lovely to hear how you are doing and what you experience. You are greatly missed and i really hope this trip is becoming everything you hoped it would be!!! Here its practically summer- 20+ degrees, sun is shining and ppl walking around in shorts.. its fanitastic, consodering how the danish weeatehr can act in these spring months! Looks like me coming to dusseldorf in september is in jeopardy- i'm working on a plan B but my older sister is getting married.... on the 6th of septmeber, so you see i have to plan it so it seems i was never gone... dun quite know yet how to do, maybe its borrowing a car and driving down instead of flying... hmmm i am not done thinking about a brill plan that will suit her and me:) hehehe. hope to hear from you soon! take care KK!!!!
Much Love,
Tinz
